Twice a year, the top 50 managers from the various Vion Business Units come together to discuss their strategic priorities. Are we going in the right direction? Should we change tack? Or do we need a complete strategy overhaul?

"I am very pleased to finally meet again in person after two years of team meetings during Covid," said John de Jonge as he opened the BU Pork Strategy Meeting which took place on 27 and 28 June in Düsseldorf. It was an emotional meeting as all participants were well aware that this would be his last after a run of 30 years. Following John's motivating opening speech and encouragement to use the time to catch up with colleagues in person, it was then over to Boi Snellaars. The BU Pork Finance Director gave an overview of the current figures. After a short break, Leon Cuypers then took to the stage. The future COO of the Business Unit presented the current strategy and the focal points and challenges for BU Pork in the short and medium term.

It's no secret that the pork market is currently facing considerable challenges, especially in Germany. A fighting spirit, a desire to win, and especially Vion's resilience defined the entire event. "I have no doubt that we will succeed," said John de Jonge. "But we need to strengthen our resilience and find new solutions off the beaten track. That's why we are here today."

After an afternoon of discussions and ideas, the participants further strengthened their resilience over dinner and drinks. The desire to win was so strong that everyone arrived on time for the first session at 09:00 the next morning. No knockouts to report.

The first session was well worth it from a business point of view. It was also very emotional to say goodbye to John. The participants reflected on John's greatest strengths in small groups. They then gave short and appreciative words of thanks which moved some to tears.

Later that morning, some groups worked on a creative solution for the Emstek site: how can we help Emstek on the road to success and better prepare it for the future? The other groups worked on how Vion sees itself and what should be kept, expanded, or done away with in future. Fuelled by a delicious lunch, the top 50 then set off home. The next meeting is planned in just a few months' time.
